Mahaveer Jayanthi on Saturday 16 04 2011

April 16 is a special day for the Jain community , which will celebrate Mahavir Jayanti . The occasion marks the birth of the last of 24 Tirthankaras and is a red letter day on the community festival calendar .
"It is almost 2,600 years since Mahavir Swami attained nirvana but the rituals and ceremonies that mark his birth remain constant . Jain 'upashrays ' which are located near 'derasars ' usually draft a special skit involving 'chhappan kumarika ' or 56 small girls .

In Mumbai , a group of devotees organises a procession from Pydhonie to Azad Maidan ," says Prafulbhai Shah who moved to Virar several years ago but continues to visit the Shantinath Jain derasar in Fort each day after work
