Sabarimala pilgrims facing hardships

Though the number of Sabarimala pilgrims arriving at the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple is increasing day by day, the lack of adequate facilities is putting the pilgrims to immense suffering.

''Inadequate number of toilets is one of the main problems faced by pilgrims from other states,'' said Subrahmanian, a devotee who arrived from Tamil Nadu.

''The City Corporation, which has the responsibility to ensure facilities for pilgrims, is doing very little,'' said Ayyappa Seva Samajam secretary Jayakumar.

''The three toilet complexes in front of the temple are quite inadequate to cater to the demands of the large number of pilgrims. The Corporation should set up temporary toilets near the temple,'' he said.

''There is sufficient space near the Vaikuntam and the Bhajanappura palace to set up temporary toilets,'' he said. Some pilgrims complained that the hotels and wayside eateries are charging exorbitant rates from pilgrims too.

''Many of us who arrive from other states are poor. But we are charged high rates at these hotels,'' said Aditya, a driver and a pilgrim who came from Karnataka. Most of the hotels still do not display the price list, despite a warning from the district administration.

Though sufficient traffic personnel were absent in the initial days, more number of policemen have been deployed near the temple on Sunday. Pilgrims' vehicles are now diverted to Attukal, Enchakkal and Karikkakom areas now. But absence of toilet facilities is posing problems for pilgrims arriving at Enchakkal.

The temple authorities should take steps to put an end to the fleecing of pilgrims in the temple, said Jayakumar. ''Traders inside the temple complex give pilgrims the 'thattam' with coconut, fruits and flowers to be offered to the Lord. But many come to know that it would cost them Rs 50 only when they are approached by their agents near the main door,'' said Jayakumar.

Many also flayed the special 'darshan' offered by charging Rs 20 from Sabarimala pilgrims. ''This is a discrimination to the pilgrims from distant places. The temple authorities' claim that the amount is to be paid to the staff who do additional work is laughable,'' said Pradeep, a local.

Why this kolaveri, Dhanush?

Dhanush, the new generation poetu, has taken music lovers, especially those young at the heart, by awe with his latest song, 'Why this kolaveri di...' from '3', his pet project that is being directed by his wife Aishwarya Dhanush. He shares screen space with Shruti Haasan in the film.

Even as two songs with colloquial lyrics from 'Mayakkam Enna' are sky-rocketing the charts, this song has come as yet another surprise from the National Award winning actor. Tunes for '3' have been composed by debutant Anirudh, who we must say, has managed to make a good impact with his very first single, especially in social networking sites.

The rough cut of the song was leaked and created waves in the internet. Following which, making the best of this response, the makers released the official version of the song which is way better than the rough cut in every aspect. They also released the making of the song, which has received more than one lakh views overnight!

If the rest of the album is to be as entertaining as this single track, Anirudh is sure here to stay!

Shakal Pe Mat Ja – Movie Review

In Shakal Pe Mat Ja, it is four friends, Ankit Sharma (Shubh), Rohan Malhotra (Chitrak Bandhopadhyay), Bulai (Harsh Parekh) and Dhruv Sharma (master Pratik Katare) who get caught by anti-terror police at the international airport for suspected activity. The activity? They are capturing on camera the landing of a plane.

The comedy-of-errors is meant to be a rib-tickler of sorts. Bumpkin type, commoner protagonists meet equally blundering anti-terror police officers Chavan (Saurabh Shukla), and police officer Om Prakash (Raghubir Yadav). The recipe sounds like fun but isn't as crackling. A long-drawn out screenplay and misfiring chemistry between actors constantly get in the way of an enjoyable time.

The film is a debut venture of Shubh who also plays the lead. While he plays the lead with a decent amount of capability, the direction sorely lacks vision or guidance. Tacky dialogues and tackier events weave a flimsy story together that does no one any real service.

In between the contrived mayhem of innocents mistaken for criminals there is a track of Ankit's girlfriend Prachi (Aamna Shareif) that doesn't really fit into the story. It makes the whole ensemble look patchier than ever.

The film boasts of some good talent that generally has us enjoying our cinematic outings. But tagged with a reluctant-to-perform script and seriously unfunny lines Saurabh Shukla, Raghuvir Yadav, Zakir Hussain and ilk have anything much to sink their teeth into.

Low-budget, non-star films have started to make a distinct niche for themselves. But that niche which dictates its watchability is got to do largely with a strong script and stronger direction. Without either, Shakal Pe Mat Ja remains a forgettable product with nothing to offer.

Vinod Kambli's claim that 1996 World Cup semifinal was fixed rubbished by Azharuddin

Former Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin on Friday lashed out at Vinod Kambli for hinting that India's 1996 World Cup semifinal match could have been fixed, saying the allegations have been made by a person who lacks character and were "absolutely rubbish".

"Absolutely rubbish, whatever he (Kambli) is talking. He doesn't know what he is talking, when you have people who have no character and no background come on TV and talk absolute rubbish in front of the nation and demeaning all the players who played in the team, it is totally disrespectful and its very sad," a livid Azhar told reporters.

Azhar, who was the Indian captain at that time, said the decision to field first was a collective decision. "May be when he was sitting in the meeting, he must have been sleeping," he added.

Kambli, a former Indian cricketer who has often been embroiled in controversies both on and off the field, on Thursday raised suspicion on the 1996 World Cup semifinal between India and Sri Lanka and said he found "something amiss" in the game.

iPhone 4S possibly to hit India by November 24

It seems Apple is trying to shed its tag of using India as a dumping ground for its products. With the iPad 2 launching rather quickly in India, this time around it seems that the iPhone 4S will launch a month and 10 days after it was made available in the US. According to a report by BGR.in, their sources have revealed that the latest iPhone will be announced by Aircel and Airtel on November 24th which is falling on a Thursday. They go on to claim that the phone will be made available from midnight on the 25th of November which is a Friday. Apple tends to stick to the tradition of having product launches on Fridays, so in all likelihood it will be the same here as well.

Apart from the date of availability, the website also reveals the tentative pricing of the iPhone 4S as well as the 8GB version of the iPhone 4. Their sources have informed them that the iPhone 4 8GB will sell for around Rs. 30,000 while the highest capacity iPhone 4S would sell in the region of Rs. 50,000. This is some seriously high pricing but it is not confirmed yet and apparently carriers are working out plans so hopefully these handsets will be available at a cheaper rate.

BGR is usually quite spot on regarding Apple related information and if this turns out to be true, one should start saving from now itself if they want to pick up the 'best iPhone ever.'

Samsung Galaxy Note

Samsung Electronics unveiled its 5.3-inch smartphone Galaxy Note in London on Thursday. The size makes it a kind of halfway house between a phone and a tablet PC.

The phone was originally to be released in the U.S. first, but Samsung changed its mind.

Its 5.3-inch screen makes it easier for users to make notes or watch videos than the 3-4-inch screens of normal smartphones. It is equipped with a dual-core 1.4GHz processor and Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, is 9.65 mm thick and weighs 178 g.

With a stylus pen, users can make notes or touch the screen with greater precision and sensitivity.

After the launch in London, the Galaxy Note will be released in Korea and abroad, Samsung said in a press release, but the exact dates have not been decided.

Nokia unveils Windows phones, competition for Apple, Samsung??

okia chief executive Stephen Elop said beleaguered company was seeing a 'new dawn' as it launched its first range of Windows handsets marking its intent to fight back against Apple's iPhone and rivals using Google's Android's operating system, and regain market share in the crucial battle for smartphone sales.

"Today marks the rebirth of Nokiaa¦We are signalling our intent, right now, right here to be the leaders in smartphone design and craftsmanship," Elop said. He was speaking at NokiaWorld 2011 event in London. The two Windows phone - Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 - will be available in India by the year-end and is priced at 420 euros (about 29,000) and 270 euros (about 19,000), respectively.

"World is ready for something new. Lumia is light ... Lumia is the first real Windows Phone," Elop declared to the 3,000 strong London audience.

He also unveiled enhanced basic phones called Asha - "hope" in Hindi - aimed at emerging markets of India, Africa and Latin America, and having web surfing capabilities similar to that of smartphones.

"The line is blurring between smartphones and mobile devices. There's multiple customisable home screens, very similar to a lot of smartphones," Elop said.

The handset maker said the 'Asha' range of phones would help it target the "next one billion" consumers to get online as only about 30% of the world's population had access to the internet.

"Our research suggests the next billion is a really young crowd. They see technology as a way to upgrade their life, despite affordability constraints they are extremely savvy phone users. For those people today we are producing 12 phones per second, one million phones per day, 365 million phones per year," he added.

The Nokia Asha series of four handsets - 300, 303, 200 and 201 - is priced between 60 euros ( 4,100) and 115 euros ( 8,000) and will begin shipping between the year-end and early 2012, Elop added.

Analysts that the Asha range of basic phones could have a bigger impact on the company in the short-term as 60% of its business comes from non-smartphones. Interestingly, Nokia has dumped rival browsers in its basic handsets and has installed its own browser that it claims can compress web commands by 90% speeding up internet access on 2G networks.

The Nokia chief executive said the company had made rapid progress post February 2011 when it had announced that it was abandoning its Symbian operating system for its smartphones and opting for Microsoft's Windows platform.

"Wife-sharing" haunts Indian villages as girls decline

When Munni arrived in this fertile, sugarcane-growing region of north India as a young bride years ago, little did she imagine she would be forced into having sex and bearing children with her husband's two brothers who had failed to find wives.
"My husband and his parents said I had to share myself with his brothers," said the woman in her mid-40s, dressed in a yellow sari, sitting in a village community centre in Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh.
"They took me whenever they wanted -- day or night. When I resisted, they beat me with anything at hand," said Munni, who had managed to leave her home after three months only on the pretext of visiting a doctor.
"Sometimes they threw me out and made me sleep outside or they poured kerosene over me and burned me."
Such cases are rarely reported to police because women in these communities are seldom allowed outside the home unaccompanied, and the crimes carry deep stigma for the victims. So there may be many more women like Munni in the mud-hut villages of the area.
Munni, who has three sons from her husband and his brothers, has not filed a police complaint either.
Social workers say decades of aborting female babies in a deeply patriarchal culture has led to a decline in the population of women in some parts of India, like Baghpat, and in turn has resulted in rising incidents of rape, human trafficking and the emergence of "wife-sharing" amongst brothers.
Aid workers say the practice of female foeticide has flourished among several communities across the country because of a traditional preference for sons, who are seen as old-age security.
"We are already seeing the terrible impacts of falling numbers of females in some communities," saysBhagyashri Dengle, executive director of children's charity Plan India.
"We have to take this as a warning sign and we have to do something about it or we'll have a situation where women will constantly be at risk of kidnap, rape and much, much worse."

RA.One review

Cast: Shahrukh KhanKareena KapoorArjun RampalArmaan VermaShahana Goswami, Tom Wu
Directed by Anubhav Sinha
Rating: Not even One
Science fiction is an oxymoron. And when this genre is sprinkled with moronic humour and logic takes a beating from hell, you know you've punched your tickets for 'RA.One'. With metallic blue and red costumes right out of Falguni Pathak's  wardrobe, this out-of-console experience offers laughs, dances and androids touching humans in more ways than considered socially acceptable. Insert coin to read more.
The film sweeps us into a video game fantasy where anything is possible (with a 175-crore-budget , it better be). Game developer, Shekhar Subramanium (Shahrukh Khan) wants to earn his son, Prateek's (Armaan Verma) love and respect. And the only thing that gives Prateek joy is to see his joystick twiddling to spell doom for the most vicious video game super-villain ever. So daddy makes a baddie just like that and calls it RA.One (Arjun Rampal). The game also has a not-so-indestructible superhero called G.One (an emotionally challenged Shahrukh). Please read the box carefully for the 25 permutation-combinations in which RA.One and G.One can kill each other (something to do with the heart being in the body and not in the pocket or anywhere else during combat).
Anyway, it gets nasty as our virtual warriors tear out of the game, 'Terminator 2'-style. Also, thanks to some goofy programming, RA.One is hell-bent on killing Prateek. Naturally, G.One has to do the rescuing and being an android, do it without getting teary-eyed or romantic with Prateek's mum, Sonia (Kareena Kapoor). But who said robots can't ham or chant prophetic life-changing verses coded by its master? No.One!
Humour based on linguistic stereotypes may have worked in 'Zabaan Sambhalke ' but now it hardly earns a chuckle. This is assuming the average audience intellect dictates that Tamilians don't always say 'Aiyoo' or pronounce 'keys' as 'kiss'. And even if they do, no amount of laughter track can make this seem funny. No.Fun!
'RA.One' does what no other Sci-Fi movie has done before: it mocks itself. So, the superhero who is manually stopping trains in one scene, is also burning his crotch or sneezing out metallic wires in another. No respect.
Shahrukh's robotic expressions will remind you of his 'My Name is Khan' role, as he confuses machines with differently-abled humans. Kareena's character covers the entire gamut of expressions but isn't memorable or mentionable enough to be regarded. Arjun Rampal has bagged his dream role: an android with mechanical expressions who allows his body to do the talking. Good job, Arjun Rampal's body!.

100 SMSes limit to steal freedom from youngsters

Youngsters are likely rue curbs on their unfettered freedom to communicate as the telecom regulator begining on Tuesday would restrict the number of text messages from a SIM to 100 a day.

College students are the biggest users of the short messaging service (SMS) — which are available at affordable tariffs — to chat with their friends and would be the hard hit by the new norms.

COAI, which represents GSM operators, is in discussion with the Trai to remove the cap on SMSes.
The new Trai regulations would also disallow popular internet websites such as Way2SMS and 160by2 from sending SMSes to a mobile user, who barred the unsolicited SMSes.

People, mostly youngsters, use the internet-based text messaging companies to send free SMSes to their friends.

“Unfortunately the new regulation treat websites like ours as telemarketers, which is not correct. We offer person-to-person communications. People use it to send personal messages and not telemarketing communications,” said Mr V.V. Raju, the CEO of Way2SMS.

Satellite hits Earth, location unknown

A decommissioned Nasa satellite, the biggest piece of US space junk to fall in 30 years, has crash-landed but the precise location is not yet known, the US space agency said early Saturday.

Nasa has repeatedly said there is only a "very remote" risk to the public from the 26
fragments of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) which were expected to survive the fiery re-entry into the atmosphere.

The satellite fell back to Earth between 11:23pm Friday and 1:09am Saturday (0323-0509 GMT Saturday), but the precise re-entry time and location "are not yet known with certainty," NASA said.

"The satellite was passing eastward over Canada and Africa as well as vast portions of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans during that period," it said in its latest update.

On its Twitter feed, Nasa said, "If debris fell on land (and that's still a BIG if), Canada is most likely area."

The two dozen parts of the UARS that may have survived re-entry could weigh anything from two to 350 pounds (1-158 kilograms), the space agency said, and the debris field is expected to span 500 miles (800 kilometers).

Maruti plans new Dzire, standoff at Manesar continues

Amid the ongoing standoff with the workers at its Manesar plant, car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) is understood to be planning a new variant of its entry level sedan Dzire that will be rolled out from the unit.
In a clear sign that the management is looking ahead irrespective of the existing workers resuming duties or not, MSI has started trial production of the new Dzire that will qualify for excise duty benefit given on small cars in India.

The new Dzire will, however, be exported to markets in Latin America, North Africa and the Middle East before being launched in India early next year, a source said.
"The new Dzire will be exported to countries like Morocco, Algeria, Chile, Peru and Saudi Arabia to start with. Initially, 1,000-1,500 units every month are being targeted... to be produced only at the Manesar plant," the source said.

The export of the car will start by this year-end.

Chidambaram would be in jail had there been Jan Lokpal: Anna Hazare

In the midst of fresh controversy in the 2-G spectrum case, anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare today said home minister P Chidambaram would have been behind bars had the Jan Lokpal legislation been in existence.

"Had there been a Jan Lokpal now, Chidambaram would have been in jail," Hazare, who earlier branded the Union home minister as a "mischievous person", said.

Chidambaram would have to "go home" in the 2G scam, Hazare said at his village Ralegan Siddhi in Ahmednagar district.

"Chidambaram is 'khodsal' (a Marathi word which means a mischievous or a dishonest person)," the Gandhian had alleged soon after returning to his village this month while giving an account of his arrest and release in Delhi ahead of his fast on Jan Lokpal issue.

Google Girds for a Grilling

Google Inc. is taking no chances as its executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, prepares to face a Senate hearing Wednesday on whether the company is abusing its dominance in Internet search.

Hoping to fend off any antitrust action, Google has hired at least 13 lobbying and communications firms since May, when the Federal Trade Commission ramped up its probe of the Internet giant. Firms led by figures from both parties—including former House Democratic leader Richard Gephardt and the son of Indiana Republican Sen. Richard Lugar—are going to bat for the company.

No more pesky calls, SMSes from Sept 27: TRAI

From the last week of September, mobile phone and landline users registered with the National Customer Preference Registry - a modified version of what was earlier called Do Not Call Registry - will be free from these phone calls and text messages.

Trai had announced the new rules last year under which telemarketers, who call customers registered with Do Not Call, would face fines of 75,000 for the first violation and up to 2.5 lakh for the sixth offence, following which they would be blacklisted for two years. However, this has not been implemented yet.

A common and easily identifiable number series for calls and SMSes emanating from telemarketers wasn't available, which initially delayed implementation.

Language Service on Mobile Phones

IMImobile has come up with a new application called the MY SMS, which will provide the Value Added Service (VAS) operators an access to the customers in their native language.

It is through the use of this service that customers can demand for SMS alerts in the language they prefer. The access to any information in the language demanded is not dependent on the mobile phone that one possesses.
The application can be easily downloaded in the phone. The customers using Symbian or J2Me featured cellphones just need to dial 56263 and the settings of the application will be received on the phone. The application does not support the operating systems like Android and many others.

Out of Vodafone's 143 million subscribers in India, about 29 million are active data service users. Data accounts for 8% of Vodafone India's revenue and customers using facebook on the network has grown four times in the six months said the telco. The handset which has a designated Facebook button has been manufactured by TCL-Alcatel for Vodafone and was conceptualized a year ago.

Punjab fight over Centres decision to drop Sikh Marriage act proposal

The Union government's decision to drop the proposal for a separate Sikh Marriage Act has come under severe criticism from various political as well as religious quarters in Punjab. If Akal Takht jathedar on Tuesday exhorted Sikhs to put pressure on UPA government to revoke the decision, ruling SAD (B) slammed the Centre for its "anti-Sikh posture".

In a rare gesture, SAD's rival organizations like Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) and Sikh radical organizations have joined hands with it on the issue. "I think law minister Salman Khurshid is not aware about separate Sikh identity. Even in Pakistan, Sikhs enjoys separate Anand Karaj (Marriage) Act and the same right has been denied here," said jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh.

HC stays execution of Rajiv killers for 8 weeks

The Madras High Court on Tuesday stayed for eight weeks the execution of Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan, the three convicts in the former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case even as the Tamil Nadu Assembly appealed to President Pratibha Patil to reconsider their mercy pleas.

The execution was fixed for September 9 after the President rejected the clemency petition of the three early this month.

Minutes before a division bench of the High Court, comprising Justice C Nagappan and Justice M Sathyanarayana, restrained the Vellore Jail Authorities from executing the death sentence,  the Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution moved by Chief Minister Jayalalitha urging the President to commute their death sentence to life imprisonment.

Modi govt likely to move resolution against Governor

The Narendra Modi government is planning to move a resolution against Governor Kamla Beniwal in the upcoming Monsoon Session of the Assembly — the first such move in the 51-year history of the state — as the controversy over the appointment of a Lokayukta by the Governor snowballed into a full-fledged political battle in Delhi.

The state government has already challenged the Governor’s move of appointment of the Lokayukta in the Gujarat High Court. Highly-placed sources in the state government said the issue has turned political and the Opposition Congress is making it a big issue. “So to counter the Congress attack, the Government’s strategy is to raise the issue of alleged misuse of powers by the Governor on Congress direction. The government is seriously thinking of bringing a no-confidence resolution against the Governor and appeal for her recall from the state,” a source said.

Bird flu on the rise again

Avian or bird flu is showing signs of a resurgence, while a mutant strain – that cannot be prevented by vaccination - could be spreading in Asia, the United Nations has warned. This mutant strain appeared in Vietnam and China and its risk to humans cannot be predicted, veterinary officials said.

Virus circulation in Vietnam threatens Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia, where eight people have died after becoming infected this year, officials warned. The World Health Organization says bird flu has killed 331 people since 2003. Bird flu upsurge has also killed or provoked the culling of more than 400m domestic poultry worldwide and caused an estimated $20bn (£12.2bn) of economic damage. Avian flu has in the past two years appeared in poultry or wild birds in countries that had been virus-free for several years: Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Bulgaria, Romania, Nepal and Mongolia are among those recently affected.

The virus had been eliminated from most of the 63 countries infected at its 2006 peak, which saw 4,000 outbreaks across the globe, but remains endemic in Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia and Vietnam. Number of cases has been rising again since 2008, apparently because of migratory bird movements, said the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) chief veterinary officer, Juan Lubroth. He said, "Wild birds may introduce the virus, but people's actions in poultry production and marketing spread it."

Plane skids of at Kochi airport runway

It was a close shave for 137 passengers onboard a Gulf Air plane when their plane skidded off the runway at Kochi airport in Kerala. Seven passengers were injured in the incident.

Some passengers in panic, jumped down from the aircraft through the emergency door even before the ladder was brought to the flight, airport sources said.

The runway has been closed for bigger aircraft following the incident, airport director ACK Nair said.

One passenger who was injured has been admitted to a nearby hospital and the others were discharged after first aid. It would take another 10 hours for the airport to be fully operational. However, smaller ATR aircrafts can land, he said.

The incident occurred at 3.55 am when the Bahrain-Kochi flight shot 5-10 metres off the runway. It was an Airbus A-320 plane.

Reports say one of the wings of the plane also broke off. Officials say heavy rain and wind was responsible for the incident.

Gambhir to miss Rest of the England Tour

Gautam Gambhir, the India opening batsman, could miss the solitary Twenty20 international against England in Manchester on August 31. Gambhir had a light batting session during India's optional training at Grace Road, but informed team management that he was not able to clearly sight the ball on a few occasions.

"He said that he could not see the ball at times when it came at full speed," Shivlal Yadav, Indian team manager. "He will be taken to an eye specialist in Manchester on Tuesday." With people making use of the long Bank holiday weekend (Saturday through Monday), Yadav said that private eye specialist who was recommended was on leave and the next available date for an appointment was August 30. "Based on what the specialist says we will have to wait for the next step. As of now it seems difficult," Yadav said about Gambhir's participation in the game.

HC rejects Yeddyurappa's anticipatory bail plea

The Karnataka high court on Monday rejected Yeddyurappa's petition seeking anticipatory bail.

The high court, which had reserved its order last Friday, pronounced its order rejecting his anticipatory bail. The anticipatory bail plea was filed by Yeddyurappa following a summons by the trial court in a land scam case. Yeddyurappa, apprehending arrest, had sought anticipatory bail.

Although his petition has been rejected, it does necessarily lead to an arrest. However, he would now have to appear before the trial court hearing his case. The trial judge would now have the jurisdiction to either direct him to appear before the court or order his arrest.

A local lawyer had filed a complaint alleging Yeddyurappa's involvement in a land scam. The complaint was filed before the governor, who in turn sanctioned prosecution of the former CM. The trial court took cognisance of the matter and issued a summons to Yeddyurappa, who moved the high court seeking quashing of proceedings and also anticipatory bail.

Monday's order against the former chief minister would continue with no legal hitches unless the Supreme Court is moved in the next couple of days.

Mother Teresa Biography and Important dates of her life

Mother Teresa Biography

Mother Teresa (26 August 1910 – 5 September 1997), born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, was a Catholic nun of Albanian[2][3] ethnicity and Indian citizenship, who founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India in 1950. For over 45 years she ministered in her own way to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity's expansion, first throughout India and then in other countries. Following her death she was beatified by Pope John Paul II and given the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.

In the 1970s, she became well-known internationally for her controversial work considered humanitarian and apparent advocacy for the rights of the poor and helpless. Malcolm Muggeridge documented this favourably and wrote a book Something Beautiful for God, Christopher Hitchens claims Muggeridge was "credulous" and even mistook an innovative photographic film for a divine miracle. Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity continued to grow during her life-time, and at the time of her death, they had 610 missions in 123 countries, including hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, children's and family counselling programs, orphanages, and schools. Governments, charity organisations and prominent individuals have been inspired by her work. She received numerous awards, including a number from the Indian Government, one of which was the Bharat Ratna (1980), as well as international awards, such as the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Mother Teresa has not been without her critics, however, including prominent atheist Christopher Hitchens who believes her reputation is misguided and due to people failing to examine what she actually did. Other critics are cultural critic Michael Parenti, Indian-English physician Aroup Chatterjee and the World Hindu Council (Vishva Hindu Parishad). They accuse her of proselytizing, failing to provide accounts which Hitchins could have audited and which would have allowed donors to investigate how their money was used, allowing her hospice to be primitive and run down despite obtaining vast sums of donated money which could be used to build, for example a new teaching hospital in Calcutta. Mother Teresa is further accused of strongly opposing contraception and abortion, believing in poverty's spiritual goodness and alleged 'secret baptisms of the dying'. though the baptism may not have valid according to Roman Catholic teachings.

In 2010 on the 100th anniversary of her birth, she was honoured around the world, and her work praised by Indian President Pratibha Patil though some people are unsure if she did more good or more harm.
