TheStar Tornado warning issued for Halton and Peel regions

Environment Canada has issued a tornado warning for Halton and Peel regions, while a tornado watch remains in effect for Toronto, and York and Durham regions.

The agency initially sent out the alert for areas west of the city, from Windsor and London up to Barrie and Muskoka.

The agency says a line of thunderstorms is expected to develop over Michigan and then rapidly shift eastward into southern Ontario.

Environment Canada: Tornado safety tips

The storm is tied to a cold front that was hanging over the Wisconsin area around noon, said Geoff Coulson, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada.

“As the cold front moves eastward, it will eventually sweep through the Toronto area, so there is a potential to see watches and warnings issued for the GTA as the day progresses,” he said.

Some of these storms are expected to be severe — with large hail, damaging winds, lightning and torrential downpours — and could develop into tornadoes.

An area of showers has already developed over the Bruce Peninsula and over Lake Huron, says Coulson.
